Written for children but offering readers of all ages a very important lesson, The Rabbit Listened is an incredible book by Cori Doerrfeld.
You know how everyone keeps on trying to fix everything that hurts, rather than just offer a hug and allow us to deal with the pain? This amazing book, upon its thoughtful wording and heartwarming illustrations, expresses how one hug is more powerful than any other strategy.
The Rabbit Listened teaches our little ones to deal with loss, through understanding and acceptance, a process crucial to developing empathy to self, compassion to others, and inner resilience.

When Taylor’s amazing wooden-block tower is knocked down by a flock of birds, Taylor doesn’t know how to deal with his loss. One by one, he is approached by his animal friends, all offer him advice that doesn’t sooth him. The bear suggests rage, the snake offers revenge, the chicken offers a talk; but nothing feels quite right for little Taylor. Until the rabbit approaches, and with his silence and warmth offers Taylor nothing but empathy, which is exactly what we all need, when we are feeling down.
This is an incredible book we can all learn from – children and adults alike. My little one keeps getting back to it over and over again and truly enjoys the search for the “right” solution, that ends up being empathy. Every time something hurt or bothers him, his initial response is always “Mommy, a hug!”. He knows that once he gets his dose of empathy, his loving heart and sharp mind is free and again able to look for other strategies to meet his needs.
